Don’t Be The ‘I’ in DUI.
Impaired driving costs California lives. Too many impaired drivers involved in crashes that killed people thought they were fine. They see their mistake in hindsight and that they should have known better. But by then, it’s too late.
Driving under the influence of anything – alcohol, cannabis, drugs or a combination of drugs and alcohol – is always dangerous and illegal with financial and life-changing consequences. The science is clear — you’re a different driver under the influence. Your reaction time slows, your focus and peripheral vision is reduced.
It is why we started the “Don’t Be the ‘I’ in DUI” education campaign. The campaign focuses on how nobody wants to be the one who must explain why they drove impaired, got a DUI, and now live with the consequences.
If you plan on drinking, consuming cannabis or use medications that may affect your ability to drive, always plan a sober ride home. Whether it’s a friend, family member, rideshare service or public transportation, have a “go safely” game plan that involves a designated sober driver. That’s always a win-win.
Here are five facts about impaired driving to keep in mind so that together, we all get to and from places safely:
- Driving under the influence of any substance that affects your ability to safely operate a vehicle is illegal.
- Medicine taken together or in combination with alcohol or other drugs increases impairment.
- Do your research: read the warning label on your medication. Any drug that states it “may cause drowsiness or dizziness” or with a “do not operate heavy machinery” warning label is one you should not take before driving.
- Most drugs taken for colds, allergy, muscle or nerve relaxers may make you drowsy.
- When considering fines, legal fees and increased insurance costs, a DUI can add up to more than $13,500.
